Sonora High gets fire engine

Sonora High School’s wildland fire technology class has a bright and shiny fire engine to use for drills, thanks in part to inmates at Sierra Conservation Center — the prison west of Jamestown.

Sonora High bought the engine and equipment from the California Office of Emergency Services in Sacramento for $750, said fire technology teacher Craig Konklin.

Sierra Conservation Center inmates participating in the jail’s auto painting program recently gave the fire engine, built in the mid-1980s, a coat of paint. They also did some minor repair work.

It’s now complete with a wildcat decal, a nod to Sonora High’s mascot.

Sonora High’s wildland-fire technology class, which has about 15 students, uses the engine to practice using fire hoses and pumping water.

While it’s an older model, the engine had only 46,000 miles on its odometer when Sonora High bought it, Konklin said. Before coming to Sonora High, it was used in Georgetown in El Dorado County.
