Sonora Elementary buildings burned in Nov. fire get fixed

The Sonora School District Board of Trustees last week accepted a $1.3 million bid to renovate a pair of buildings badly damaged in a Nov. 23 fire.

The renovation of buildings D and E is slated to begin in May and end in August.

A third building, Building F, was damaged beyond repair.

Insurance will cover about $1 million of the project, which will go to BC Construction out of Ceres. The district will foot the remainder with money from its $7.8 million Measure H bond measure passed in 2010.

Insurance is paying for complete internal restoration to bring the rooms back to their original state and also will make sure the building comes up to code with safety and disability access standards, according to Superintendent Leigh Shampain.
