Sonora City Council gets new members

PUBLIC MEETING: Sonora City Council, 5 p.m. today, Sonora City Hall, 94 N. Washington St.

Two new Sonora City Council members and a new mayor will take their seats today.

As the first regular meeting of the city’s fiscal year, today’s business will include the swearing in of councilmen-elect Jim Garaventa and George Segarini. The two will replace 12-year councilman and recent Mayor Hank Russell and four-year councilman Matt Hawkins.

Garaventa and Segarini received the two highest vote totals in the June 3 primary election out of four candidates. The final results were very tight, with only 16 votes separating the first and last vote-getters, and remained in doubt for almost two weeks as mail-in and provisional ballots were counted.

Russell, who will finish his third term and a stretch as mayor today, opted not to run for re-election this year. His successor, who will run the council meetings as mayor, is also scheduled to be chosen by the councilmembers after Garaventa and Segarini are sworn in.

Also on today’s agenda is a public hearing on the city’s Community Development Block Grant funding application. The city can apply to the federal program every year, offering projects or services that benefit low-income populations like homeless shelters, housing projects, low-interest loans and others and can sponsor local groups or projects to receive funding.

The application project is competitive, meaning funding is not always guaranteed.
