Bear Valley Mountain Resort starts daily operations today for the 2013-14 ski season.
The resort, off upper Highway 4 just east of the Calaveras County line, is the first of the regional ski resorts to open this winter.
“We opened last weekend just for the weekend,” said resort spokeswoman Rosie Sundell. “We haven’t opened that early in a few years, so it was a lot of fun.”
Snowmaking operations at Bear Valley have allowed the resort, at a base elevation of 7,500 feet, to open before Christmas break.
“It’s hard without snowmaking,” she said.
Leland High Sierra Snow Play, off Highway 108 east of Strawberry, also plans to be open through the holiday season.
Dodge Ridge Winter Sports Area, off Highway 108 near Pinecrest, is prepped and ready to open at a moment’s notice.
