Skate park construction on a roll

By SCOTT PESZNECKER

Construction of a new skateboard area in Murphys is rolling right along.

Wednesday morning, workers at Feeney Park finished pouring concrete for the flat portions of the planned 100-feet-long, 60-feet-wide park.

When finished, the area will offer an assortment of rails, ramps, stairs and pipes for skaters.

Feeney Park, a 17-acre spread along Highway 4, already has soccer fields and a baseball diamond.

And by this summer, said John Yost, president of the Feeney Park Association, the community park could have its skateboard area up and running.

"Over the winter, we were sort of frustrated," Yost said. "Every time we tried to get something going, it rained or conditions wouldn't be right.

"Now that we're pouring cement and building walls, you can see that there's going to be a park there. It's exciting," he said.

Two volunteers and a cement contractor joined 17 inmates from the Vallecito Conservation Camp to get Wednesday's job done.

Workers left some gaps in the concrete where ramps and other structures will be built.

The skate park will feature 60-foot-long, quarter-pipe ramps on the two shorter sides of the rectangular park. A 6-foot tall "pyramid" type structure fit with stairs, ramps and rails will stand in the middle. The top of the pyramid will be flat so skateboarders can start from there and gain speed to hit other ramps.

In about two weeks, workers will begin building walls around three sides of the park. Then, workers will begin building "features" — such as ramps and rails.

"Building features is the hardest part," Yost said.

Total construction costs for the park should be less than $35,000, Yost said. He said he has already raised about $27,000 for the park.

About $7,000 was donated by Calaveras County residents in response to a flier that went to every mail and post-office box from Angels Camp to Arnold, Yost said.
