Schools plow into FFA week

Future Farmers of America students will publicly promote their organization this week for national FFA week.

The recognition is considered particularly important this year because a long-standing state agriculture grant is not included in next year’s state budget. Students are hoping to help get it restored.

Students began publicizing agriculture education over the three-day holiday weekend.

In Calaveras County, Bret Harte High School FFA Chapter students provided food education information to shoppers inside grocery stores, according to the school’s agriculture department chair, Roy Beck.

One factoid shared by students: “Did you know margarine is one molecule away from being plastic?”

On their return to school today, several Bret Harte teachers will be kissing farm animals at lunchtime.

Students already voted which teachers would be doing the kissing by dropping change in jars they each had. The top three change-earners will be kissing a pig, a lamb and a chicken, respectively. The money goes to the Friends of the Calaveras County Fair.
