Schools leader steps down

By CLAIRE ST. JOHN

After overseeing four years of dramatic changes in the Summerville Union High School District, Superintendent Linda Frost will leave the Tuolumne campus in June.

Since December, she has been solicited to head up a "high-tech high" school in the San Carlos area, in San Mateo County, she said. But with a new charter school, small-but-necessary high school and a thriving student community at Summerville High, she declined to go.

But the more she heard about the job, the better it sounded.

Frost calls it a dream situation — the charter school is new, well funded and innovative.

"It's everything positive about education," Frost said of San Carlos High School. "It's a community that's expecting reform, that's expecting things to be done."

The "high-tech high" concept involves a curriculum geared toward getting students ready for college as well as the work world that awaits them after graduation.

"Their freshmen don't take physical science, they take physics," Frost said. "Their schedule is the four core subjects, and then they take on-line college courses."

Juniors and seniors often serve internships in the fields of their choice, Frost said.

The "high-tech high" will be a lot different than the performance arts-oriented charter school Summerville High School started this year.

But Frost said the high-tech students have arts embedded in their curriculum.

"It'll be a challenging last part to my career," Frost said. "My last hurrah."

Frost said she'll miss Tuolumne County, however.

"The only drawback is, I love this community, the environment, the woods."

Board President Marcia Williams said Frost will be missed in Tuolumne.

"I think the community is losing a valuable asset," Williams said. "Linda Frost has done a lot for the district, and the board is very sorry to see her go."
