Hazel Fischer Elementary School in Arnold will soon have $10,000 worth of new books for the shelves of its remodeled library.
From colorful tales of tiger cubs and baby elephants to more substantial volumes on American Indian nations, the books come courtesy of Target Stores' Library of Books promotion.
On Nov. 13, Target presented 100 schools across America with $10,000 gifts to purchase books for their libraries.
Hazel Fischer School is among the schools.
Last fall, people who shopped with their Target Visas or Target Guest Cards were automatically entered in Target's Library of Books promotion. The winners, chosen at random, won $5,000 Target gift cards and got to choose schools to receive the $10,000 gifts.
Arnold residents John and Nancy DeCoste won, and chose Hazel Fischer School for the library money
Nancy DeCoste is an instructional aide on campus.
"When she told me about the prize, I was so happy," said Hazel Fischer School Principal Karin Lubin. "Some other parents were here, and we were all hugging each other. Then we went to the library and told the librarian, and folks were actually jumping up and down they were so excited about it."
Hazel Fischer and other winning schools received catalogs from three publishing companies: Capstone Press, which publishes nonfiction for pre-schoolers through 12th-graders; Picture Window Books, which publishes easy-to-read books; and Compass Point Books, which publishes series on history, science, social studies and geography as well as biographies for kindergartners through eighth-grade students.
From these catalogs, the school can order $10,000 worth of new books.
"The teachers are choosing books that support their curriculum and the librarian is going through the catalogs and I've given my input," said Lubin.
She said she was eager to get more reference books, multi-cultural books, science books and books that emphasize values.
