School gets new cosmetology building |
Sonora Union High School District’s new cosmetology building is on track to be finished by spring, according to district Superintendent Mike McCoy. A kit building was erected Friday, and over the next two months contractors will install cabinets and plumbing, McCoy said.
Global Incorporated of Chowchilla is completing the work and local contractors provided the cabinets, he said. District officials expect to move into the building in May. McCoy said he didn’t have a final tally for the project cost, which is being paid for through saved developer fees and ROP funds, but he said construction costs are lower than normal because of the lagging economy. The cosmetology program is part of the Yosemite Regional Occupational Program and there are 50 students enrolled, with another 50 on a waiting list. “We’re looking forward to having one of our most popular programs in a new facility,” McCoy said. The program is housed now at the district’s Sonora Dome campus in an adjacent building. The current cosmetology facility measures 2,200 square feet and has inadequate space, handicap access, parking, hot water and power, officials said. The new 3,800-square-foot building is situated next to the Sonora High baseball field.
The building is pre-fabricated and was assembled on site, but looks like a conventional building, officials have said. |
