Law enforcement officials are investigating an interstate check-cashing scam that uses Tuolumne County as part of the scheme.
The office of the Tuolumne County Clerk and Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office both received numerous calls this week from people who had been targeted.
While Sheriff’s Sgt. Scott Johnson said it appears no one has lost any money through the scheme so far, he said the department is documenting the reports and detectives are investigating.
“A lot of these things are tough (to investigate),” he said. “They originate from either other countries or something like that.”
County Clerk Debi Bautista said her office started receiving calls about the supposedly county-isssued checks on Monday, with about 10 coming in so far. All of them have come from other states, some as far away as Pennsylvania and Florida.
