Santa’s Express, an annual charitable program that relies entirely on donations and volunteers, plans to help about 1,100 Calaveras County families this Christmas by providing food along with new toys and coats.
Food and gifts will be distributed to most families next Friday, Dec. 20. The food, which will include a turkey or ham, will allow families to prepare a holiday meal. Those with children will also receive new toys or coats, depending on the child’s age.
“Families have just been so grateful because of their limited incomes, especially with higher heating bills given all the cold weather we’ve been having,” said Jeannie Hayward, director of The Resource Connection Food Bank.
In addition to the main distribution at The Resource Connection, off Pool Station Road in San Andreas, there are distributions planned for next Friday in Murphys and West Point.
Area Rotary clubs packed food Thursday and plan to deliver it to about 200 families on Saturday. Also this weekend, Cal Fire plans to deliver toys they collected on a fire truck.
The San Andreas office of the California Highway Patrol also collected toys for Santa’s Express.
