SHS trustees to certify Measure J

The Sonora High Board of Trustees will formally certify Measure J for the Tuolumne County Board of Supervisors Tuesday, verifying that the district followed the law in passing the $23 million bond measure Nov. 6.

Measure J passed by 56.49 percent of the votes cast in the general election, allowing Sonora High to begin renovating its most outdated facilities. Construction on some projects could begin as early as this summer.

The next step in the long process for using Measure J funds is the establishment of a citizens’ oversight committee that will advise the school board on spending decisions.

Sonora High Superintendent Mike McCoy said the district will soon start accepting applications for the oversight committee.

Also at Tuesday’s meeting, the board will hear a report on Sonora High social studies programs and consider modifying graduation requirements to allow vocational classes as a substitute for fine arts and foreign language courses.
