Roundup marshal race intensifies

The Mother Lode Roundup’s Honorary Town Marshal contest turned into a horse race Wednesday afternoon.

As of 2 p.m., Slim Edwards and Dave Crocker  — both credited with many years of community service — were one vote apart. Edwards had 42 and Crocker 41.

Then someone dropped off 10 more votes for Edwards, giving him a 10-vote lead by 3 p.m.

Votes were cast for 10 people in all as of Wednesday afternoon. Bill Dunlavy was in third place. Other vote getters were Larry Cope, Sharon Marovich, Zane Orr, Tony Ybarra, Bob Leslie, Carlo De Ferrari and Max Kernaghan.

Clip-out ballots can be found in The Union Democrat today and Friday. The election’s only ballot box is in the newspaper’s lobby at 84 S. Washington St. in downtown Sonora. The deadline for voting is 5 p.m. Friday.

Ballots can be copied and handed out to friends and family to fill out, but each ballot must have a unique signature, or it won’t be counted. Duplicate signatures will be thrown out.

Faxed or emailed ballots won’t be counted. Neither will votes for dogs, cats, horses or other prank candidates.

The Honorary Town Marshal title was created in 2000 to honor the late Edward “Wimpy” Jones. The winner of the 2013 election will receive a badge from the Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Posse and join the Mother Lode Roundup queen and grand marshal in leading the May 11 Roundup Parade along Washington Street.

The race is one of many events leading up to Tuolumne County’s biggest yearly event, the annual Mother Lode Roundup Parade and Rodeo on Mother’s Day Weekend.

Roundup weekend includes two full days of rodeo at the Mother Lode Fairgrounds, the Saturday morning parade up Washington Street in Sonora, a Saturday night dance and Sunday morning Mother’s Day breakfast.
