Residents warned of heat wave

The National Weather Service and local health officials are warning the public about a heat wave expected this weekend in the Mother Lode.

Friday’s high temperature is forecasted at 98 degrees, climbing to 101 by Saturday. Sunday’s high will drop to 91.

Monsoonal moisture, which bunches up along the eastern Sierra slope, will bring clouds and isolated thunderstorms to the High Sierra today and Sunday.

Light winds are also expected today through Saturday, about 5 to 9 mph.

This combination of hot weather and winds is especially dangerous for fires.

Burning is not allowed during the day, and tonight is not a burn night.

The NWS also advises people in the area to finish outdoor activities in the morning if possible, and to minimize exposure for elderly, children and animals.

The Tuolumne County Public Health Department also urges the public to prepare for the summer heat by checking water stores, generators, medication supplies and cooling systems in homes and businesses.

Also, people should wear appropriate clothing and hats and use sunscreen if outdoors.

Drink plenty of water, too.
