The American Red Cross established the evacuation center at the Mother Lode Fairgrounds in Sonora at 220 Southgate Drive for evacuees of the Rim Fire and it benefits from community support.
The most simple and effective way to help is to bring or mail cash donations to the Sonora branch office at 13669 Mono Way, Sonora, CA 95370.
The Red Cross gets supplies at a discount, so cash goes further in their hands, a volunteer explained.
The evacuation center also needs spontaneous volunteers. Would-be volunteers should go in person to the evacuation center and fill out an application, to which they will do an immediate background check. Volunteering can be scheduled around work hours.
Some food can also be accepted. Preferences are for easily handed out snack foods like crackers, sugar-free foods for diabetics, non-perishables like peanut butter and jelly and microwave-friendly foods. However, the facility does not have a freezer, so do not bring food requiring freezing.
