Rain not drought-buster

Rain falling in Phoenix Lake won’t put a dent in drought conditions faced by Tuolumne County residents. Maggie Beck / Union Democrat, Copyright 2014.
A pair of storms hitting the Central Sierra over the next few days will bring some needed precipitation to the region, but water experts say it would take much more to reverse the historically dry conditions at this point.

Tonight’s forecast for Sonora shows a 50 percent chance of rain, before jumping to 90 percent Friday. The prediction drops to 50 percent Saturday, followed by a slight chance of rain through Tuesday.

Higher elevations above 6,000 feet could receive up to 4 inches of snow today, according to the National Weather Service. The snow level will drop to 5,500 feet Friday, with another 4 inches possible.

A slight chance of rain and snow at higher elevations is possible through Tuesday, however, temperatures are predicted to increase slightly over the weekend.

That amount of anticipated rain and snow over the weekend won’t offset the worst drought seen in decades, according to experts.
