Proposal gets city’s goat

Denette Bettencourt, of Bushwacker Goats, talks about the work she does with her goats on Wednesday in Angels Camp. Jesse Jones / Union Democrat, Copyright 2014.
Paying for goats to graze city-owned land has gotten the goat of some Angels Camp City Council members.

Sonora-based Bushwacker Goats have been grazing on acreage sprayed with the city’s treated wastewater for the past 12 years, with the exception of a brief absence in 2009.

Currently, 400 goats graze the land, confined by 4.5 miles of electric fencing. The property, off Highway 49 at the southern end of the city, includes about 60 acres of irrigated pasture watered by numerous 4-foot-high sprinklers.

Until August 2009, the city paid $1,650 for use of the goats, who ate the fields of rapidly-growing vegetation. Due to a “lack of finances” the city stopped paying the fee, and Bushwacker Goats owner Denette Bettencourt attempted to make profit from the sale of kid goats.
