Prison panel seeks members

By SCOTT PESZNECKER

Two Calaveras County residents will be appointed to a committee that acts as a liaison between the public and administrators at Sierra Conservation Center.

Calaveras County supervisors agreed yesterday to use legal notices to advertise the openings on the Sierra Conservation Center Citizens Advisory Committee.

The committee's members are mostly from Tuolumne County. A few members are from Calaveras County. The committee meets every other month to discuss prison issues.

Calaveras seats are filled by Copperopolis residents Bill Albee and Darla Mayer, and Calaveras County Undersheriff Randy Grasmuck.

Albee was appointed by prison warden Matthew Kramer, Mayer was appointed by the Calaveras County Board of Supervisors and Grasmuck was appointed by Calaveras County Sheriff Dennis Downum.

Mayer's term expires at the end of this month. The board will advertise to fill her seat and one more now-vacant opening.

Terms last for two years.

Mayer, who did not attend the meeting, said yesterday she wants to reapply for the committee.

"It is very informative," Mayer said. "The information that gets out about the facilities there is usually so distorted, it's nice to be kept informed and involved with what goes on there."

"So often what's going on at the prison does impact our communities," said Kathy Prosper, SCC chief deputy warden, told supervisors. "It's important to have someone on the committee who volunteers, who wants to be there."

Penal code requires that all state prisons have a citizen advisory committee.

Prison advisory committees can have up to 15 members.

Two members must be appointed by a prison's district assemblyman, two must be submitted by the district's state senator, two by the city council in the area of the prison, two by the county board of supervisors and one jointly by the chief of police and county sheriff of each county.
