The U.S. Forest Service continues to work toward reopening popular campsites and picnic areas within the Stanislaus National Forest’s Rim Fire closure area before the busy summer season arrives.
Service officials hope to have three day-use areas — Rainbow Pool, Middle Fork and Carlon — and three campgrounds — Diamond O, Sweetwater and Lost Claim — open by next month, said acting Groveland Ranger Mitchel White.
The six were damaged in the 257,000-acre fire that burned huge swaths of the forest and parts of neighboring Yosemite National Park.
Workers have removed trees deemed hazardous due to fire damage and replaced damaged signs.
Volunteers also recently cleaned up Rainbow Pool, a popular swimming hole.
