Pertussis outbreak growing

The Tuolumne County Public Health Department on Tuesday warned of the further spread of pertussis — or whooping cough — among the school population.

Health Officer Dr. Todd Stolp said several cases were confirmed Monday and Tuesday and there have been many more suspected cases recently.

The first case confirmed by a lab test was on Monday and involved a child under 10 at Summerville Elementary School. This allowed the health department to confirm connected cases which were previously only suspected, Stolp said.

There are five root cases now, some connected to each other through social circles and some not, Stolp said.

He confirmed that multiple schools are involved, but declined to name them. He said the department is getting reports from “virtually every school” of prolonged coughs now. Awareness and prevention should be looked at universally, he said.
