Calaveras County supervisors will vote Monday on renewing an annual fee on developed lots that funds the county's solid-waste budget.
Since the 1970s, the Public Works Department has collected Solid Waste Parcel Fees to pay for solid waste disposal.
The current fee is $150 for each lot with one single-family house which is adjusted depending on how many families live on a property, and on the size of the houses or buildings.
Supervisors will be asked to approve the same $150 fee for the next fiscal year. The fees must be renewed annually.
The fees usually cover the annual solid waste budget, which averages $3.3 million, said Rob Houghton, deputy director of Public Works.
Money not spent on the budget is put into the department's capital improvement trust fund, which now stands at $4 million.
About $1.2 million will be put into the trust fund after this fiscal year because there hasn't been any significant construction at the county's solid-waste facilities, Houghton said.
"Over the long term, we don't make any money," Houghton said. "In some years, we don't want to spend all of our money so we can do construction later without taking out loans."
In about three years, Public Works could spend about $3 million from the trust fund to build a new refuse cell at the Rock Creek Solid Waste Facility in Milton, Houghton said. The cell would extend the life of the landfill another 10 years. Though there are transfer stations around the county, Rock Creek is the county's main waste facility.
