One suspect in the beating of Sonora man on Sunday night has been arrested and another remains at large.
Jonathan Douglas, 31, of Sonora, suffered a severe head injury when he was beaten by two men in the parking lot of an apartment complex on the 100 block of Columbia Way around 11 p.m., according to Sonora Police Department officials.
He was transported by helicopter to Doctor’s Medical Center in Modesto for treatment and then to another unspecified hospital where he remains in serious condition, said Police Chief Mark Stinson.
Stinson said officers responded to the apartments about 11:30 p.m. regarding a reported assault that had just occurred. Upon arrival, they found Douglas unconscious and injured.
According Stinson, witnesses at the scene identified two suspected assailants as Joshua Connell, 32, and Fredrick Rivette, 28, both of Sonora.
Stinson said there were “conflicting accounts” of the circumstances leading up to the alleged assault. Witnesses said they didn’t see any weapons being used by the suspects.
Shortly after the incident, officers responded to Connell’s residence on the 100 block of Columbia Way and took him into custody on suspicion of felony battery with serious bodily injury.
Connell remained in Tuolumne County Jail on $35,000 bail Tuesday. His arraignment is scheduled for 4 p.m. today in Tuolumne County Superior Court.
Formal charges against Connell are still pending a Tuolumne County District Attorney’s Office review.
The second suspect, Rivette, is still on the loose. He was described as 6 feet tall, 170 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes.
Stinson said Rivette was not at his residence when officers checked and hasn’t shown up at his place of employment in the Sonora area for the past two days.
Anyone with more information regarding Rivette’s whereabouts is asking to call the Sonora Police Department at 532-8141.
