The body found about a mile north of White Pines Lake on Sunday night was identified yesterday as a 53-year-old Avery man.
Bradford Lavelle Davis died of multiple gunshot wounds and was left underneath some bushes about 100 yards from a dirt road.
Calaveras County Coroner Kevin Raggio said Davis' body had probably been there up to four days before a hiker spotted it.
Calaveras County Sheriff's Department investigators suspected foul play from the beginning, because of where the body was found, just off a dirt road, about 100 yards from the end of the paved portion of Blagen Road.
Lt. Gary Kuntz, who is overseeing the investigation, could not be reached this morning for comment.
