Snow-hungry Belleview Elementary School students found some release in another winter sport this week — ice skating.

Although many students professed a preference for skiing or snowboarding, the consensus Thursday was that ice skating is pretty cool.

Gliding around the Long Barn Lodge Ice Skating Rink to the sounds of Avril Lavigne, the more proficient sixth graders tried to help the younger kids get their feet.

With a few quick ice skating lessons and metal contraptions that look like walkers and serve roughly the same purpose, even kids who were ice skating for the first time said they were enjoying themselves.

"It's fun and you fall down and you get hurt," said sixth grader Jared Trew.

Despite his obvious enjoyment of skating, Trew and his classmates long for the snow. Many of them recently purchased snow gear and season passes to Dodge Ridge and are anxious to use them.

Belleview School has a ski trip planned for late December, but sixth grader Alicia Schlenz remained dubious.

"We're supposed to go on the 20th, but I have a feeling its not going to snow by then," she said, on a break from skating.

Classmate Marcus Norwood had a different take:

"I'm still gonna go snowboarding, even if there's no snow," he said defiantly.

Norwood might not have to snowboard down dead grass just yet. The weekend forecast calls for light snow and scattered showers that should continue through next week.

But will it be enough to ski on?

The question didn't seem to interest first graders and best friends Bailee Self and Anna Russell-Madonia, who just nodded when asked if they were having fun and if they missed the snow.

"I'm gonna go skate some more," Self said, gliding fairly gracefully back onto the ice.
