Hair spray hung in the air like the haze above Los Angeles. Twenty ladies in silk, taffeta, chiffon and velvet sat rigidly with their hair in different stages of completion. Long tendrils were draped across patient faces, awaiting countless bobby pins. And Red Carpet time was only 15 minutes away.
The ladies were the "guests" for "A Night at the Oscars" the theme for the 22nd annual Sonora High School Regional Occupational Program Cosmetology Hair Show, held Saturday at the Sonora Dome.
The "stars" would come later. But first, every coiffure had to be completed and given a final dousing of hairspray. Makeup had to be touched up, not a sparkle of glitter out of place. Nails needed to shine with buffed perfection, gowns were fussed at and shawls draped alluringly across shoulders.
"Work it baby, work it," coached instructor Kelli Slater.
The time was up. And the decked-out girls sauntered toward the stage to the tune of "Summertime," played by the Sonora High School Jazz Band. They turned around to show the backs of their dresses, or lack thereof, and upswept dos. Then they lined up on stage holding numbers written on yellow squares of paper.
"Basically, they need to look like if they walked into the Oscars, they wouldn't be underdressed," Slater said.
Judges from Vivid Illusions, Sonora Hair Depot and Rapunzel Day Spa and Salon took notes and inspected the models carefully.
"I think it's pretty fun," said "guest" Rachel Warriner, 31. Her dark hair was swept up in a crown of curls and faux jewels shone around her eyes.
A dental assistant in Sonora, Warriner said she was participating for her friend, Morgan Minners, a Sonora High School student.
"We actually take weeks preparing for this," said ROP student Katie Stovall, 26. The Jamestown resident said she hopes graduating from the program will help her get a job in a salon.
Students in the program have a range of experience, with anywhere from 200 to 1,600 hours of hair and makeup time under their belts.
