New memorial tree planted

Two boys confessed Monday to tearing out a tree in White Pines Park that was a memorial to an Arnold man killed in the war in Afghanistan, according to the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff’s Sgt. Anthony Eberhardt said the youths, both age 12, were cited for vandalism and released to their parents.

The boys will have to report to the county Probation Department, Eberhardt said. He said the boys did not know the tree was a memorial and were remorseful.

The dogwood tree was pulled out sometime on April 6 and put atop a bathroom structure, Eberhardt said. There were no witnesses, he said.

The tree was planted in 2011 in honor of Gavin Brummund, a Marine lance corporal who was killed when he stepped on an explosive in 2010 in the Helmand Province of southern Afghanistan.
