Moke River bill on docket today

PUBLIC MEETING: Calaveras County  Water District Board of Directors, 5 p.m. today, District Boardroom, 120 Toma Court, San Andreas.

The Calaveras County Water District’s Board of Directors will hold a special meeting at 5 p.m. today to discuss legislation that would designate the Mokelumne River a California Wild and Scenic River.

Discussion and possible action regarding CCWD’s position on Senate Bill 1199 — which calls for protecting 37 miles of the river between Salt Springs Dam and Pardee Reservoir — is the only item listed on today’s agenda.

Director Dennis Dooley plans to participate in the meeting via teleconference from Angels Camp.

The bill passed the state Senate three weeks ago and is expected to be heard by an Assembly committee on Monday.

The urgency of the CCWD meeting, which was announced Wednesday morning, has to do with potential amendments to the bill, said Board President Scott Ratterman.

State Sen. Loni Hancock, D-Oakland, introduced the legislation in April following a resolution passed by the Calaveras County Board of Supervisors in February calling for the river to be protected.
