A Modesto man died early today when his car flipped several times on Highway 108 just east of the Tuolumne-Stanislaus county line.
Two other passengers were injured in the crash, one critically, said California Highway Patrol Officer Tom Wills.
The wreck occurred about 3:35 a.m. when the man's Mitsubishi Eclipse convertible lost traction coming out of a curve east of Tulloch Road.
High speed and the driver's intoxicated state contributed to the crash, the CHP said.
The driver, 49, whose name has not been released by the Tuolumne County Coroner's Office pending notification of his family, died at the scene, Wills said.
Passenger Jeremy Orr, 23, of Modesto, suffered moderate injuries in the wreck and was transported to Tuolumne General Hospital. An update on his condition was not immediately available.
A second 20-year-old female passenger, whose name has not been released by authorities, suffered multiple traumatic injuries and was taken by helicopter to Doctors Hospital of Modesto, Wills said.
There have now been 24 traffic fatalities in Tuolumne County so far this year. There were 21 deaths in all of 2002.
