The Mi-Wuk Sugar Pine Fire Protection District expects to get a 90-foot cell phone tower at its Highway 108 property within two years.
At its Tuesday meeting, the district board signed a contract with Sunkay Associates, a cell tower company.
Sunkay will begin surveying the district’s property for construction measurements and the surrounding area for wavelength possibilities. If those numbers fit, the company will reach out to major cell phone providers for a contract and build a tower.
The plan as of now is for a 90-foot tower to the immediate left of the district’s garage, which sits on the scenic Sonora Pass road. The district wants it painted green or camouflage, according to Chief Larry Crabtree. That height is about the height of the surrounding trees, he added.
“You’ll be able to see it,” he said, but, in the versions he’s seen, a green tower can blend in.
