Mark Twain board to meet

An agreement that could lead to a new elementary school in the proposed Oak Canyon Ranch development will be before Mark Twain Elementary School District trustees tomorrow.

Oak Canyon Ranch developers, proposing a huge housing and commercial development near Copperopolis over 20 years, have agreed to donate 15 acres to the district for a school site.

The district now has two elementary schools: Copperopolis and Mark Twain.

"By having the (school site) donated, it leaves us funds for construction," said district Superintendent Rick Brewer.

Brewer said the board will discuss the agreement and, most likely, approve it. The agreement is contingent on the developers receiving project approval from the Calaveras County Board of Supervisors, Dec. 15.

"Once we know they're approved and we get a construction schedule, we'll be able to plan," Brewer said. "I'd estimate that after the first 800 homes are sold, we'll be constructing (the new school)."

The board will also swear in new officers, establish meeting dates for the next year and appoint members to the four standing committees: negotiations, special education, summer school and interview.
