Man fights with police in Sonora

An unidentified man reportedly attacked a Sonora Police Officer and tried to take away his Taser this afternoon.

Witnesses said the officer reportedly stopped the man while he was walking north on the 1200 block of Highway 49. The officer ordered the man to the ground and pointed a Taser at him. Witnesses said the man charged the officer and grabbed the Taser before he could be subdued.

Several emergency units were called to the scene at about 1:10 p.m. in front of Vic’s Towing, where owner Randy Selsia said he witnessed the event.

“The officer made a stop and the guy just flat attacked him,” Selsia said. “The officer had his Taser drawn. (The suspect) seemed to be extremely irrational.”

Officers took the man into custody and were transporting him to Sonora Regional Medical Center for unknown reasons.

Details were scant Wednesday afternoon, and it was unclear why police initially stopped the pedestrian. Read Thursday’s Union Democrat for more details about the incident.
