"Kindness heroes," as named by Mark Twain Elementary School District students, will be honored tomorrow night when the Angels Camp City Council meets.
Each year, the students write essays about those they consider heroes because of acts of kindness these heroes have performed. Authors of the winning essays then read their work before the council, audience and the people they are recognizing.
Because the annual essay presentations typically draw a large audience, Mayor Debbie Ponte asked that the council meet at the new Bret Harte Theater at Bret Harte High School.
Following the readings, Faye Perata, the new city clerk, and Monica Parker, the new city treasurer, are to be sworn in. The two were appointed at a council meeting last month.
The council is also to officially appoint the new city fire chief. In January, the council asked Mark Scott, El Cerrito's fire chief, to become the first full-time paid fire chief of Angels Camp. Scott, with 34 years in professional fire service, was among 25 candidates to seek the job when it was advertised in October and November.
Council members will also discuss and consider adopting a resolution accepting work done to replace a waterline on Park Avenue.
The work was completed Feb. 7 and meets plans and specifications, reported city Engineer Gary Ghio.
An agreement between the city and the Calaveras Visitors Bureau is also to be discussed. The draft promotional agreement states that the Visitors Bureau will develop a marketing and promotional plan for the county and the City of Angels Camp.
In return for the promotional efforts, the city will pay the bureau one-third of the proposed 4-percent increase in Transient Occupancy Tax, if voters approve the higher tax in May.
And a public hearing on an ordinance amending the approval procedures for lot line adjustments is to be held.
Also on the council agenda:
A 5 p.m. workshop to review the city's annual financial report;
Discussion of an easement on Davis Sierra Drive.
