Jamestown sidewalk a step ahead

A project to install sidewalks near downtown Jamestown that celebrate Tuolumne County’s Hollywood heritage could begin by late summer.

The Tuolumne County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday unanimously voted to seek bids on an effort estimated to cost almost $1 million to install sidewalks on Seco, Willow and Ninth streets.

The cost will be covered entirely by a state grant.

According to the county’s Community Resources Agency, the schedule calls for construction to begin shortly after Sept. 14, when officials hope to award a contract.

The plan calls for building sidewalks and curbs that will connect Jamestown’s historic downtown to the elementary school and nearby Railtown 1897 State Historic Park. The specific locations include Willow Street from Main Street to Fifth Avenue, Seco Street from Main Street to Preston Lane, and Ninth Street from Seco Street to Sierra Avenue.

Those stretches total 3,690 linear feet of 4-foot-wide sidewalks, and the project will also include flashing crosswalks and bus stops.

And some of the sidewalk will be more than a walkway thanks to the Jamestown Promotion Club. The organization raised money and will pay to install 30 bronze, 17-inch medallions along Seco and Ninth streets, each recognizing a different film shot in Tuolumne County.

The area was once popular for filming Westerns and has been featured in major movies like “Back to the Future III” and “High Noon,” as well as television shows like “Petticoat Junction” and “Little House on the Prairie.”

The medallions will form a local walk of fame, with each one featuring a film and the lead actor or actress. Each medallion cost about $1,000, which was raised through sponsorships spearheaded by the club.
