Infant death looms; homicide charge possible

A Jamestown man arrested for allegedly abusing his infant daughter faces homicide charges following a decision Wednesday to remove the girl from life support, according to Tuolumne County District Attorney Mike Knowles.

The girl, 3-month-old Kali Boehmer, has been on life support at Oakland’s Children’s Hospital since her admission Sunday. She has no brain activity, Knowles said.

Both parents consented to taking the child off life support and donating her organs, Knowles said.

Knowles said the girl will be taken off life support within the next two days.

It was unclear this morning if the girl has already died.

Kevin Michael Boehmer, 26, pleaded not guilty Wednesday during an arraignment in Tuolumne County Superior Court to a charge of assault on a child under 8 years resulting in a coma or paralysis.

Boehmer will be charged with a homicide-related crime at the time the girl dies, Knowles said.

Boehmer took his daughter to Sonora Regional Medical Center at 9:50 a.m. Sunday because she was having difficulty breathing.

Hospital staff noticed several old bruises and injuries around the child’s neck and chest and reported it to the Sheriff’s Office, Sgt. Jeff Wilson said.

Boehmer was arrested for suspicion of willful cruelty to a child resulting in possible injury or death.

Judge Eric DuTemple granted Knowles’ request on Wednesday to increase the bail to $200,000 from $100,000, which was set when Boehmer faced a lesser charge.

The maximum sentence for the current charge is life in prison with possibility of parole, Knowles said.

Boehmer, a Manteca native, appeared to have recently moved to Tuolumne County from Aberdeen, Wash.

The girl’s mother, Tiffany L. Tucker, is incarcerated in Washington on charges of child cruelty or neglect, Knowles said.

Two of Boehmer’s friends who attended his arraignment declined to be quoted directly but called the baby’s injuries an accident, and said Boehmer lived for his child.

Boehmer’s preliminary hearing is scheduled for 8:15 a.m. Jan. 11 in Department 4 of the Tuolumne County Superior Court.
