Hwy 4 fire is under control

Mop-up crews continued this morning to work on the Ramsey Fire, which is still 95 percent contained.

U.S. Forest Service spokesman Jerry Snyder said the fire will continue to burn slowly within containment lines along steep slopes, so nearby residents and forest visitors can expect to see smoke in the area when the fire ignites some of the heavier brush.

He said it’s expected the fire will put itself out over the next couple of days.

The blaze, located about eight miles east of Dorrington, broke out Aug. 11 from an escaped campfire. A citation has been issued but forest officials have not divulged other details.

Hundreds of state and local firefighters descended upon the area to protect homes along the Highway 4 corridor.

At its peak, 16 structures were threatened and homeowners were given pre-evacuation notices. Structures in the area are no longer threatened by the fire, which has burned 1,137 acres, according to the Forest Service.

Six firefighters were also injured while battling the blaze. One was taken by helicopter to a hospital and five others were treated at the scene for reactions to bee stings. All have since recovered.

Snyder said an interagency incident management team that took control Aug. 14 returned command operations to the Forest Service on Monday. Planning crews have since moved their base camp from Bear Valley to the Dorrington fire station.

Just more than 100 firefighters remain on the scene to continue extinguishing hot spots. Fire lines must be closely monitored over the next week so remnants of the blaze don’t ignite vegetation on the other side.
