Two people who died in a Monday morning house fire in Murphys have been identified as Robert Wight, 82, and Joanne Wight, 81, said Keith Rosa, Calaveras County deputy coroner.
The cause of death was smoke inhalation in both cases, Rosa said.
The fire at the Wights’ Butte Mountain Road was reported at 4:26 a.m. by one of the Wights, according to Cal Fire officials.
Volunteers from the Murphys Fire District arrived at the remote home at 4:56 a.m., followed seconds later by Murphys Cal Fire units, said Lisa Williams, Cal Fire spokeswoman.
It has been determined the fire started on the home’s deck, and the origins were “not suspicious,” said Gordon Winningham, fire investigator for Cal Fire.
The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation, Williams said.
A relative of the victims said Wednesday the family did not wish to comment and was having a “difficult time” coping with the tragedy.
