Tuolumne County’s high school football teams will be forced to play home games at other schools this season.
Both Sonora and Summerville high schools are spending bond money from 2012 bond measures on athletics projects, which will leave both school’s playing fields out of commission for much, if not all, of the football season.
About $4 million of Summerville’s $8 million Measure H will go to replacing its track, field and bleachers and renovating the snack shack.
About $1.3 million of Sonora High’s $23 million Measure J will go toward similar renovations.
Both projects are expected to get state approval this week.
After state approval, the districts must bid the projects and hope to maintain their construction schedules. Both timelines already call for a loss of at least some of the fall football season.
Even if approved today and bid in one week, Summerville’s 70-day timeline would put project completion at the very end of September. That would force two home football games to be played away and come within days of a third displaced game.
That third game had been the homecoming game, but that’s now been pushed back to the last home game, Nov. 7.
Sonora’s 100-day timeline is an almost sure loss of the entire season, according to Superintendent Mike McCoy. The loss of gate fees and added costs for team transport to away games would total about $30,000.
