Home and Garden Show this weekend

It’s beginning to look a lot like spring across the Mother Lode and that can mean one thing — the 31st annual Home and Garden Show is back in Sonora this weekend.

Local contractors, lawn-care specialists, roofers, interior designers and air conditioning experts are among the pros who will help area residents with advice on sprucing up homes and yards during the free event.
The show, at the Mother Lode Fairgrounds, runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.
More than 100 vendors will be on hand, giving demonstrations and advice to homeowners, as well as plenty of free swag, according to Union Democrat advertising director Gary Piech, event organizer.

Roughly 6,000 people are expected to attend the event this weekend.

“It’s a fun community social event that’s free to the public,” Piech said. “If nothing else, people can come to have a good time.”

The Home and Garden Show will feature a wide variety of booths from local hardware stores, pest control companies and spa installers, as well as banks and furniture makers.

There are 20 new exhibitors at this year’s show, Piech said.

Kitchen Kraft will perform cooking demonstrations and spectators will be able to eat free samples. Show attendees will also be able to enter a drawing to win a gas barbecue, Piech said.

Many vendors will offer special discounts during the weekend show that aren’t normally available.

“You’re going to get some of the best deals of the year if you go to the show,” he said.

The Independent Order of Odd Fellows will occupy a booth for the first time at the show, serving up sausages and hot dogs.

The Home and Garden Show will be spread out among four exhibitor buildings — Creekside, John Muir, Sierra and Manzanita — and an outdoor area.

Parking is limited at the Mother Lode Fairgrounds. A free shuttle will carry visitors from the parking lot at The Junction shopping center, 13775 Mono Way, East Sonora. The bus will stop in front of T.J. Maxx and drop visitors off at the front gate of the fairgrounds.
