Highway 108 fire update

A grass and oak woodland fire along Highway 108 just west of Mono Way has burned 11 acres and the forward rate of spread was stopped about 6 p.m. according to Cal Fire Captain Barry Rudolph.

Full containment of the fire is expected at 8 p.m. and firefighters were not expected to remain on scene overnight, Rudolph said.

The fire was reported about 1:45 p.m. this afternoon and the cause was under investigation, Rudolph said.

As of 7 p.m. there were no reported injuries or structure damage.

Rudolph was the incident commander and  first to arrive at the scene of the fire. He arrived minutes after the fire started and saw about 100 by 100 foot area engulfed in flames and rapidly spreading east.

Rudolph set up a command center behind the Tuolumne County Transit yard and ground and air fire crews battled the fire.

Rudolph said the fire conditions are currently six weeks ahead of the usual because of the dry conditions caused by the drought. Cal Fire is at peak staffing already. Eight Cal Fire engines, two Sierra Conservation Center Baseline crews, two Tuolumne County Fire engines, water tenders, air tankers, helicopters and bulldozers were all needed to contend with the Highway 108 blaze.
