High Sierra claims Minor title

A six-run rally in the fourth inning powered High Sierra to an 8-3 victory over Westside last night in the championship game of Little League baseball's District 15 Minor Traveling All-Star Tournament for ages 9 and 10 at Jerry Whitehead Field in Tuolumne.

As district champion, High Sierra advances to the Section 6 Tournament next week in Sanger.

Scooter Guidry got on base to start the winning surge, which began with High Sierra (Twain Harte, Soulsbyville, Belleview) trailing 2-1. Isaiah Hazelton, Aaron Franklin and Jared English also reached, then Eddy Cruz rapped the first of three straight pivotal hits — a two-run double. Dylan Dye followed with a double to score Cruz, and Rocco Pallante capped the inning by tripling home Dye.

When the dust cleared, High Sierra had a 7-2 lead. English, High Sierra's pitcher, took if from there and finished off a complete game in which he struck out seven.

Guidry and A.J. Sooter both went 4-for-4 for the champs, while English finished 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored; Taylor Gold 3-for-4; Hazelton 3-for-5 with a run scored and a run batted in; Dye 2-for-2 with two doubles, two runs scored and two RBIs; and Pallante 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

For Westside (Tuolumne, Standard), Curtis Kellogg went 3-for-3 with a double and two runs scored, Colton Krieg 3-for-3 with a run and an RBI, and Chase Twohig 2-for-3.

High Sierra lost its first game of the tournament, 4-3 to Westside, on June 28 and then reeled off seven straight victories to capture the championship. The Sierrans forced last night's winner-take-all game by beating Westside 11-2 Wednesday night.

Westside went 4-2 in the 10-team, double-elimination event.
