A Calaveras County man whose destructive affair with the drug ecstasy was captured on an HBO documentary may face new criminal charges in Calaveras or Sacramento county.
Scott Meyers, who pleaded guilty to misdemeanor drug possession early in April, could be charged with child endangerment and furnishing controlled substances to others, Calaveras County District Attorney Jeff Tuttle said Tuesday.
County law enforcement officials say evidence gathered during two investigations, the first in October 2000 and another on Friday, was supported by the HBO documentary that aired Sunday night about Meyers' alleged ecstasy addiction.
"We think we're very close" to having a case, Calaveras County Sheriff Dennis Downum said. "Probably by the end of the week, we will have a really good idea whether we can be successful or not."
Scenes from the movie, shot two years ago, clearly show Meyers, of Mokelumne Hill, and three of his four children two of whom were minors at the time taking ecstasy and enjoying the "high" they get from "rolling" together.
Gerald Meyers, a well-known retired minister in Calaveras County and Scott Meyers' father, said his son's ecstasy habit is "old news" to him. He said he continues to love "my former daughter-in-law, my grandchildren, my son and (the) local sheriff."
"I pray that the amount of good, the redemptive value, that comes from the film will be equal, at the very least, to the amount of publicity it has received," Gerald Meyers said, reading from a statement he and his wife, Venita, prepared.
And, referring to a story in a different newspaper, Gerald Meyers said he believes Downum "did not really mean what he was quoted as saying in regard to Scott deserving the death penalty."
"Scott himself might have made a similar statement only a few years ago," Gerald Meyers added.
The father would only read from his prepared statement. He declined to comment further about his son, his current situation or his whereabouts.
