Governor briefed in Tuolumne

Gov. Jerry Brown visited Tuolumne Monday morning, was briefed by fire officials and promised ongoing resources to fight the Rim Fire.

At a press conference on Tuolumne’s Main Street, Brown said the state had the money to fight the Rim Fire — which he called “one of the worst” in state history — and future wildfires.

“It may even get worse in years to come, but California will be ready for it,” Brown said. “Whatever it takes, I’m going to make sure the resources are deployed.

“The president called me yesterday and expressed his support,” he added. “Whatever we need, he’ll provide.”

Brown also thanked the thousands of firefighters battling the blaze, which was 149,780 acres as of this morning.

“I want to express my appreciation to all of those who are fighting this fire, who are breathing bad air and working long hours,” he said.

Meanwhile, Tuolumne County Sheriff Jim Mele said he had no estimate yet on when the evacuation advisory for Tuolumne would be lifted.

“We’ve got to figure out what the trigger points are and how the fire is working,” Mele said.

The fire was 15 percent contained as of this morning.

Cal Fire Information Officer Daniel Berlant said the figure of 15 percent comes from the area around Pine Mountain Like. Bulldozers have cut bare swaths of land along the fire’s northwestern flank to prevent its spread to Tuolumne and the Highway 108 corridor.

However, Cal Fire officials remain concerned about the Rim Fire’s ability to “jump” containment lines.

“This has been an incredibly fast-moving fire,” Berlant said, citing dry vegetation and inaccessible terrain as the primary factors behind its quick spread.
