Golf rally doubles tally

Tuesday's annual Rally For a Cure golf tournament at Greenhorn Creek in Angels Camp landed on the green.

Exceeding expectations, the event more than doubled its revenue from last year, raising $12,800 for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

"We're very proud," said Elaine Peters, the rally's publicity chairwoman. "We are challenged to do better every year."

More than 2,500 golf clubs across the country participated in Rally For A Cure last year. Women golfers from Calaveras County raised $5,200.

Peters said 120 women from four county golf clubs — Greenhorn Creek, Meadowmont, Sequoia Woods and Forest Meadows — teed off at Tuesday's tournament. Twelve of the golfers were breast cancer survivors.

From each entry fee, $15 went to the foundation.

About 200 businesses between Arnold and Angels Camp also contributed to the effort.

The businesses donated a total of $1,350, free dinners, gift certificates and a variety of items for a prize drawing, including free massages, haircuts and car lubes.

"The merchants were just outstanding," said Jan Hiser, a Murphys resident who helped organize the Calaveras County event.

Peters said a silent auction for nine items raised $3,700. Items auctioned off included artwork, an espresso maker, a hand-made doll house, a ski-boat rental at New Melones and trip accommodations, including use of a condominium in Cabo San Lucas.

"What really put us over were some of the nice items in the silent auction that the women had a lot of fun with," Peters said. Next year's event will be held at Meadowmont in Arnold.
