Golden day for bellringer

The Salvation Army is about $1,700 richer after an anonymous Tuolumne County resident donated a gold coin on Friday.

Cathi Nies, finance manager at the Sonora Area Foundation, said the person, who did not want to be identified, walked into her office Friday morning and handed her a double eagle $20 gold coin, worth an estimated $1,700.

Double eagle $20 coins were minted until 1933 and weigh just under an ounce.

She said the donor asked her to deposit it into a Salvation Army basket of her choice and to notify the charity so that it would not be overlooked.

Without fanfare, Nies dropped it into the bellringer’s basket in front of Walmart during her lunch break Friday.
