Girl, 10, hurt in DUI crash recovering

A 10-year-old girl severely injured in a Sept. 29 car crash in San Andreas that killed her father and another woman has been released from the Sacramento hospital where she had been receiving treatment.

Stacey Ochoa is the daughter of Eleazar “Ed” Rodriguez, of Galt, widely known as “Ed the Flower Guy,” a popular merchant at the Sonora Certified Farmers Market.

Rodriguez was killed when a vehicle driven by Penny Miles, 52, of Murphys, crossed double-yellow lines going south on Highway 49 and collided head-on with Rodriguez’s truck.

Miles, who California Highway Patrol investigators suspect may have been intoxicated, also died in the collision.

Ochoa was taken to the University of California, Davis, Medical Center for treatment.

A spokeswoman for the California Highway Patrol said results from a toxicology report on Miles are expected to take about six weeks.

Initially listed in critical condition, Ochoa suffered numerous broken bones, including a broken pelvis, said Sheila Wilkinson, special programs manager for the city of Sonora, who has been in contact with her family following the incident.

Wilkinson said that, given the girl’s extensive injuries, she would not have expected her to be released.

A medical center spokeswoman said Wednesday morning that the girl had been discharged but could not specify when.

Erin O’Hare, manager of the weekly Sonora market, said a memorial will be put up for the two remaining Saturdays of the market season, this weekend and on Oct. 20. The memorial allows for people to make donations to his family and leave gifts for Ochoa.
