Fox shot by police at Sonora HS

Sonora High School was briefly locked down Tuesday so that law enforcement officers could deal with an injured fox on campus, according to District Superintendent Mike McCoy.

The lockdown happened about 11:15 a.m. and lasted about 15 minutes.

Students and teachers were sent to classrooms so that Sonora police could safely shoot the animal, McCoy said.

It was reported behind the bleachers. The Sonora Police Department said a total of four shots were fired.

Sonora High agriculture teacher Stan Kellogg said students on campus had been aware of the scenario and later wondered why so many shots had been fired.

The Sonora Police Department had no other information Thursday morning.

The dead animal was removed by Tuolumne County Animal Control, which is retaining the carcass in case anyone came into contact with the fox.

If contact is reported, the carcass will be tested for rabies, officials said.
