Forecast calls for rain into next week

The U.S. Forest Service will be monitoring the large area burned by last year’s Rim Fire as rain and high-elevation snow are expected to continue falling over the Central Sierra and Northern California into early next week.

Sonora received about an inch of rain since Tuesday night, bringing the total since July 1 to just over 13 inches. The average rainfall through March since 1906 is 27 inches.

In 1977 — the worst drought year on record — the total rainfall in Sonora was only 16 inches.

The forecast through Friday calls for a 20 percent chance of lighter rains that are expected to produce less than an inch.

Wetter storms are expected to move in from the Pacific Ocean late Friday and into Saturday as a high-pressure ridge slips eastward.
