Flu kills two from Calaveras County

Two Calaveras County residents have died from flu infections, the first logged this year, the Calaveras County Public Health Department said Monday evening.

At least one of the deaths was linked to the H1N1 strain of influenza, a particularly deadly strain making the rounds this year, the department said.

The H1N1 virus, the same one involved in 2009’s “swine flu” outbreak, has killed more than 200 people under age 65 in California this season — double the number logged last year.

It’s also killed one person in Tuolumne County, according to Public Health Officer Dr. Todd Stolp.

Seasonal flu viruses typically kill tens of thousands of people in the U.S. each year. However, the victims are mostly the elderly and people with other health issues, and the numbers aren’t tracked as carefully.

The H1N1 virus, this year’s dominant strain, is unusual in that it predominantly kills younger adults, usually more-resistant to flu infections.
