Fiery crash claims two

By ABBY SOUZA

Two people died this morning in a fiery head-on collision on Highway 4 near the Calaveras County line.

As of late this morning, neither victim had been identified, but officers at the scene indicated the victims appeared to be males.

According to a California Highway Patrol officer at the scene, T.J. Gowin, the collision occurred at 6:30 a.m. in Stanislaus County, about a mile west of the county line, when the driver of a westbound purple Nissan truck crossed the double-yellow line to pass another vehicle.

The Nissan collided head-on with an east-bound white F-150 pickup, said Gowin. The two trucks instantly burst into flames.

Soon after emergency vehicles arrived, both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene.

As of 8:30 a.m., the bodies of both drivers were still in the burned trucks. Gowin said there were no passengers in either truck.

CHP directed traffic on the rural highway around the crash scene, but officers reported no major delays were caused.

In addition to the CHP, responding to the deadly accident were crews from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, the Oakdale Rural Fire Department and the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Office.
