Fair chief choice close

Calaveras County Fair directors have tapped someone as the person they want next to oversee the county fairgrounds in Angels Camp.

At a recent closed session, the fair board interviewed five finalists for the fair manager job. From that group, the board recommended hiring one candidate and naming another as an alternate.

Board President Bob Trinchero said yesterday that background checks on the two finalists are under way.

If all goes smoothly, he said, a new manager could be named next week, but with one catch: Because of summer vacations, the board might have to put off approving his contract until September.

But Trinchero said he'd introduce the new manager to the public long before then.

"We had a terrific set of finalists," Trinchero said, referring to the five candidates interviewed. "I think the future of the Calaveras County Fair is going to be in good hands."

Trinchero said he could not comment further on who the finalists are or where they are from. He said 22 people took applications from the fairgrounds and 13 applications were filed.

Fairgrounds Manager Buck King announced in March that he would resign. He has continued working while the board sought his replacement.

King could not be reached yesterday for comment.

King, a Vallecito resident, has been involved with the Calaveras County Fair and Jumping Frog Jubilee since 1969. He has managed the fairgrounds since 1996.

In May, his last fair as manager was one of the most successful in recent years, drawing more than 40,000 people in four days.

Trinchero said he'd like to see King stick around, if possible.

"The board would like him to continue here in some role, but that decision will have to wait until the new person is on board," Trinchero said.
